Lesson One
Basics- Residential Areas
1. Instrument panel before driving (should only take about 3-5 minutes)
3. Curb park and reverse (drive test maneuver)
4. Residential area turns (10 minute segments)
5. Parallel parking (10 minute segments alternating with 10 minute segments increasing skill level on residential area turns)
6. Business area turns (10 minute segments)
7. Defensive Driving
9. Lane changes (S.M.O.G.) in light traffic (ask if they’re okay with this first!)
11. If there is time, review the road test score sheet

- Use of turn signals (don’t take hand off wheel)
- Items 9 through 14 on drive test score sheet Pre-Drive checklist
- Gas pedal and brake pedal (gradual on-and-off)
- Use of steering wheel 2. Stop signs (No agressive stops)

7. Defensive Driving
- Looking ahead, not down which is instinctive for the new driver
- Being aware of everything in the driving scene, 360º glances
- Relaxed constant eye movement, not long looks because nervous
- Surround car with space, especially good following distance ahead
- Don’t drive in a car’s blind spot or suprise drivers with sudden movements
9. Lane changes (S.M.O.G.) in light traffic (ask if they’re okay with this first!)

Freeway and Parallel Parking

1. Defensive Driving
- Looking ahead, not down which is instictive for the new driver
- Being aware of everything in the driving scene, 360º glances
- Relaxed constant eye movement, not long looks because nervous
- Surround car with space, especially good following distance ahead
- Don’t drive in a car’s blind spot or surprise drivers with sudden movements
- Two lanes into one (don’t get “trapped”- merge in advance!)
- Left turn center lane (Very important)
- Right turn bike lane(Very inportant)
- Curb park and reverse
- 4-way stop sign
- Uncontrolled blind intersections
- Left turn yields at green ball traffic lights
- Right turn on red light (with and without no turn on red sign)

Lesson Three
Mock Drive Test
1. Defensive Driving
3. Drive test material needs to be taught on both second and third lesson so the student remembers it thoroughly, the mark of having competent driving instructors so they are able to pass the drive test on the first try.
4. Do a practice drive test (NOT on the drive test site!)
